Thanks to Valletta’s unique position on a peninsula, two ferry lines connect the capital to nearby towns. One of the most popular among tourists is the Valletta – Three Cities ferry, which takes you straight to one of Malta’s most atmospheric areas and brings you back just as easily.

What Are the Three Cities?

The Three Cities—Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea (Isla), and Cospicua (Bormla)—sit across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. Picture narrow lanes, stone houses, tiny balconies, waterfront promenades, and sailboats bobbing in the marina—with constant postcard-worthy views of Valletta. It’s much calmer here, offering a glimpse into a more local, authentic side of Malta than what you’ll find in the capital.

Technically, the ferry docks in Cospicua. But like many towns around Valletta, the Three Cities have grown together into one continuous area. Locals refer to them simply as the Three Cities—always as a single unit.

Essential Info About the Valletta – Three Cities Ferry

The ferry leaves from the southern waterfront of Valletta, right next to the Gozo fast ferry terminal. You’ll also find the Barrakka Lift just a few steps away, which takes you straight up to the center of Valletta without having to deal with stairs. On the other side of the trip, you’ll arrive at the inner end of the harbor—right on the border of Cospicua and Birgu.

Along the way, enjoy the view: Valletta’s skyline on one side, the charming streets of the Three Cities on the other.

Schedule and Ticket Prices

The Valletta – Three Cities ferry usually runs every 30 minutes. The first boat leaves fairly early (before 7 AM), and during off-season, service ends around 7 PM. In high season, later evening ferries are available, but they come with a slightly higher “night fare.” Always check the schedule online before you go.

  • One-way adult fare: €2.50 (off-season: €2.00)
  • Child fare: €1.00
  • Round-trip adult fare: €4.50 (off-season: €3.80)
  • Round-trip child fare: €1.50

Ferries after 7 PM require an extra fee. For the latest prices, refer to the official ferry website linked above.

Important: Malta’s standard bus passes don’t include the ferry fare. And in peak travel season, ferries can fill up quickly—arrive at least 30 minutes early to be safe.

Boat Rides to the Three Cities

If you’re up for a more adventurous ride, there are also small tourist boats running between Valletta and the Three Cities. These are easy to find—they depart from the same general area as the main and fast ferry terminals. Just look for the colorful traditional boats and you’ll know you’re in the right place.
